The remarkable run by Russia, the host country of this year’s World Cup, bowed out in the quarterfinals after an exciting match against Croatia.
The Russians went down in extra time and equalized to get the game to penalties, but their valiant efforts weren’t enough.
That’s not the only reason why they became the next country to get knocked out of the World Cup.
That’s Not How We Scripted This
As you can imagine, many thought that Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, had something to do with the team reaching the quarterfinals, but if he were to have rigged the World Cup, Russia would’ve won, so something must have gotten mixed up between countries.
Russia does have quite the history of collusion and cheating, but this seemed much more like a genuine effort from the home side.
Home Field Disadvantage
Only six times has the host country won the World Cup. France was the last team to do that when they hosted in 1998.
It’s been 20 years, and the curse of the host country will live on as Russia fell short.
Problems in with the post
This is like one of those FIFA moments when you think you escaped, but then the cruel, cruel nature of the game comes back to bite you in the butt.
I feel for Akinfeev, I truly do. He made the effort, but the post wasn’t kind to him.
Comrade, I don’t feel so good
Russian supporters should be uplifted by the fact that their chances of winning were low from the start, so a quarterfinal loss in PK’s is nothing to be ashamed about. The Russians have reached the semifinals of a World Cup once, as the Soviet Union in the 1966 World Cup, and that drought will continue.
As the independent nation of Russia, before 2018, the national team failed to make it out of the group stages in the three World Cups they qualified for. This year was the highest finish for Russia since the 1982 World Cup, but they are now out.
D.C. Sports Curse
Alex Ovechkin might have won the Stanley Cup for the Washington Capitals, the first in franchise history, but he definitely didn’t help his home country win the World Cup.
Don’t tell me the D.C. sports curse is dead. The Capitals were an exception. It still lives on. Thanks Ovi.
All in all…
We salute you Russia for inspiring the country and bringing unknown excitement to this tournament. You captured the minds of every Russian fan, and of football fans around the world. Just don’t try to beat anyone up because you were knocked out.
