The Cleveland Browns are of course looking to draft a quarterback and they are going to find a way to screw things up.
Just curious, are you watching how Tennessee is butchering its coaching search? The guy who is running the coaching search is booster and former UT alum, Jimmy Haslam. Haslam nailed his last top quarterback pick as he chose Johnny Manziel with the 22nd pick after a homeless man told him to.
New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick noted that Manziel was undraftable, so, naturally the Browns traded up to take him in the first round.
What drew Haslam to Manziel? Was it his intellect and pocket presence? Of course not. It was the unscripted plays in the spread offense that won him a Heisman Trophy and made him a must-watch prospect. Does this remind you of any other quarterback prospects this year? Yep, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Based on the decision to draft Manziel, it is only fitting that Cleveland will pass on Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold to draft Baker Mayfield because Jimmy Haslam cannot control himself.
Because the Browns, who will have two picks high in the first round, are going to draft Baker Mayfield in the first round, let’s view his scouting report compared to Johnny Football.
Mayfield is the overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman trophy this year, but has not officially won yet.
Manziel: More than one
Manziel’s off-the-field issues are well documented, very troubling and extend from a recently-dismissed domestic violence incident to rolling up $100 bills in a bathroom. Meanwhile, Mayfield was arrested for public intoxication last year.
Mayfield has some issues that shouldn’t be ignored but is nothing compared to Manziel
In Game Antics
Manziel: Money sign
Mayfield: Crotch grab
Both players are known for their fire and competitiveness when leading their respected teams in college. Manziel created a cultural phenomenon with the money sign while Mayfield looked like a jerk when he grabbed his crotch against Kansas.
Advantage: The money sign is money. Huge advantage for Manziel
Quoted in Drake Songs
Advantage: Draft Day was a bad song at best but Mayfield has never even been used as a lyric, advantage Manziel.
In retrospect neither quarterback should be/have been drafted to a cold-weather city like Cleveland. Both are from the south and lack the elite level arm talent to play in a city where the quarterback has as many as four home games in the snow.
Mayfield: 6-feet 1-inch
Short quarterbacks are unlikely to succeed in the NFL and if they do, the quarterback needs a great situation. Think about Russell Wilson in Seattle. Great running game and great defense. Wilson’s job was to not lose games. Breaking: Cleveland is not a great situation.
Advantage: Barely Mayfield
There is no clear edge to either quarterback. When Mayfield is drafted by the Browns, he will probably flame out and be another name on the long list of quarterback busts in Cleveland. It’s not called the factory of sadness for nothing.
